Mindful Self Compassion

Mindful Self-Compassion

A 6 week course in how to be kind to yourself to build your resilience!

 Tuesday 11 Oct 2022 - to Tues 22 Nov (not 1 Nov)

7.00pm – 8.30pm

on Zoom

Self compassion involves treating ourselves with warmth and kindness, especially when we have failed, or feel inadequate. This is an opportunity to explore how you can improve your relationship with yourself and others, so becoming happier with yourself and nurturing your own resilience in life.

Mindful Self Compassion (MSC) is an empirically-supported training program designed to cultivate the skill of self-compassion. It’s based on the groundbreaking research of Kirstin Neff and Christopher Germer. The MSC course includes short meditation practices, brief talks, experiential exercises, group discussion and home practice. The goal is for participants to directly experience self-compassion and learn practices that build self-compassion in daily life. MSC is not psychotherapy, the emphasis is on building emotional skills and resources, and positive change occurs naturally as we develop the capacity to be with ourselves in a kinder, more compassionate way.

Self compassion can be learned by anyone, and will be especially useful if you feel uncomfortable when you are good to yourself.  It is a courageous attitude that stands up to harm, including the harm that we unwittingly inflict on ourselves through self-criticism.  You do not need to have practised meditation to take this course, but it’s also a good follow-on course if you have already taken a mindfulness course, or have practised by yourself.

We ask you to commit to attending all the weekly sessions, and to practising some self-compassion each day, choosing from informal practices and short guided audio meditations from the internet.  We will be meeting online from 7-8.30pm each Tuesday using the Zoom platform, which is easy to access from a laptop, computer or tablet.  The group will be between 7 and 16 people, including the teacher, and will run from 11 October to 22 November.  There is a break factored in on 1 November for the half-term.

Judith Soulsby is a Mindful Self-Compassion teacher Certified by the Center for MSC, and has 8 years’ experience of teaching this course and supervising other MSC teachers.  If you’re unsure whether this is the right time or the right course for you, or to get an application form, please get in touch with Judith at judithsoulsbywork@btinternet.com.  Judith will in any case talk with you when you apply to explain more about the course and start to get to know you.  No meditation experience is needed, but if you have taken a mindfulness course, MSC will build on that to give you further helpful life skills, enhanced by working within the group as well as at home.

The cost of the course is £135 if you’re in work, or £95 if not working and / or on a low income (if this is too much for your budget, get in touch and we’ll negotiate!).  This includes a course handout and link to short meditation practices on the internet.
